If it walks like a charity and talks like a charity…
Q: I hear people refer to YMCA’s as charities. What makes my Y a charitable organization?
A: Your YMCA is a charitable organization for many reasons:
o It exists solely to benefit the people in your community o As a volunteer-founded, volunteer-led organization, all revenue remains in the YMCA; no profits are paid to a group of shareholders, and all YMCA assets belong to your community. o It is open to people of all ages, faiths, abilities and incomes. It is YMCA policy that no one is turned away for an inability to pay.
For these reasons, your YMCA seeks charitable contributions to continually meet the needs of the people it serves. Membership dues pay for everyday operations, but your YMCA conducts annual fundraising campaigns to raise money for the extra charitable programs that help your community grow strong.
